Abstract

Traditionally, Meghalaya has an agrarian, rural-based economy wherein a sizeable proportion of the population depend on agriculture for their livelihood. However, as evident from the data, there has been a declining proportion of the population engaged in the farm sector with an accompanying increase in non-farm employment. This paper thus seeks to explore whether rural transformation has occurred in the context of Meghalaya. From the study, it can be inferred that transformation is simply an outcome of reallocation of employment from farm to non-farm resulting from employment diversification without any accompanying structural change or emergence of new manufacturing units. Local factors such as climate change, timber ban, emphasis on tourism and impetus to cottage industries appear to have contributed to such outcomes.
