Abstract

Balanced regional development is the most debated issue in the economic development of any region. Given how economic development occurs across economies, it is essential to examine whether social and economic prosperity reaches rural areas and how it is balanced with that in urban areas. The integration of urban and rural resources is essential for optimal utilisation and efficient planning for urban-rural development. The Indian state of Gujarat has shown significant economic growth; therefore, it is vital to assess coordinated urban-rural development. This paper assesses the urban-rural coordination in Gujarat using indicators to evaluate coordinated development, drawing on district-level microdata to provide a comprehensive assessment. The Urban-Rural Coordination Index (URCI) was calculated for each district using the Entropy and CRITIC methods to classify districts into five stages of coordinated development, from very high to very low, and to depict the spatial distribution in Gujarat.
